Before Hurricane Season Make a Family Disaster Plan
  • Know your home's vulnerability to storm surge, flooding, and wind.
  • Locate a safe room or the safest areas for each hurricane hazard.
  • Know if you live in an evacuation zone. Plan ahead accordingly, preferably to stay in a safer location within your community.
  • Determine escape routes and have an out of state contact.
  • Make a plan for your pets.
  • Use a NOAA weather radio. (Replace batteries.)
  • Secure your home: Protect your windows, doors, garage doors & roof.

Know The Hazards

Wind - Hurricanes are tropical storms with sustained winds greater than 74 mph. These winds can extend inland for hundreds of miles. Hurricanes can spawn tornadoes.

Rain - Sometimes the torrential rain will cause floods and flash flooding.

Storm Surge - A dome of ocean water that can be 20 feet high at its peak and 50 to 100 miles wide. Nine out of 10 hurricane fatalities are attributed to storm surge.
